The first session of the World Senior Curling Championships 2014 saw 12 men's teams take to the ice at 08:00 this morning.

The other results of this session saw Italy defeat Austria 10-4; Switzerland lost to Wales 6-5; Netherlands won against Denmark 6-3; Germany beat Japan 5-4 while Norway picked up three points in the eighth end to defeat Latvia 7-6.

In the second session of the day, men were again on the ice. Hosts Scotland secured an impressive opening win against Russia as they won 7-2 in six ends.

Canada also won their opening encounter as they defeated France 11-2 while on the next sheet Australia won by 10-1 against Slovakia.

The other scores in the session were Czech Republic 3, Finland 8; England 9, New Zealand 3 and Hungary 5, USA 8.

Australia had a really tight game against Italy winning by just one shot, 6-5.

Austria meanwhile lost out to Slovakia 6-5. Afterwards, Veronika Huber, who won silver in this event last year, said: "It was a very interesting game that we had against Slovakia - a bit of a surprise. I could see how much the Slovakia team has improved. The game was a lot of fun.”

USA beat England in seven ends by 9-4. Afterwards skip Margie Smith said: "We got six in the second end and without last stone we decided to just keep it clean.”

She continued: “We got six stones at the top of the four foot and built it up. A couple of misses by England helped.”

New Zealand defeated Sweden by scoring two points in the seventh end and stealing a single point in the eighth end for a final score of 7-6.

Afterwards Sweden skip Ingrid Meldahl, said: “We couldn’t get the right speed for the draw. Team New Zealand did draw very well.”
